- Catalyst OrthoScience joins Redefine Surgery as founding shoulder partner, off an oversubscribed $10M surgeon-backed pre-seed round — Announced September 23-24, 2026. Redefine Surgery, a 'physical AI for surgery' startup (computer vision, robotics, over 25 surgeon advisors, led by CEO Peter Verrillo), closed an oversubscribed $10M pre-seed round backed predominantly by surgeon investors and named Catalyst OrthoScience (a shoulder-only implant maker in Naples, FL, founded by and still run by Dr. Steven Goldberg) as its founding partner in shoulder. The partnership targets an integrated ecosystem spanning preoperative planning, intraoperative guidance, workflow optimization, data capture and procedural analysis, with stated goals of up to 4x procedure-time efficiency and 10x lower technology cost versus incumbent platforms (Stryker's Blueprint, Exactech's Equinoxe, Zimmer Biomet's Signature ONE, Medacta's MyShoulder). Per the release, the platform is still under development, with commercialization subject to regulatory clearance and product readiness — no product is shipping yet and the efficiency figures are the companies' own targets, not measured outcomes. - SIGNUS USA's COSY occipitocervical-thoracic fixation system completes its first U.S. surgery — Published September 23, 2026. SIGNUS USA, the U.S. subsidiary of 30-year-old family-owned SIGNUS Medizintechnik GmbH (Germany), completed the first U.S. implantation of its COSY Cervicothoracic-Occipital Rod-Screw Spine Implant System, performed by Dr. Sebastian Koga, Chief of Neurosurgery at Berkshire Health Systems (Massachusetts). COSY is a modular posterior occipito-cervico-thoracic fixation platform supporting constructs from the occiput to the upper thoracic spine, with dedicated transition rods through the cervicothoracic junction; it can be combined with SIGNUS's DIPLOMAT thoracolumbar system, already established in the US market for over a decade, to extend constructs further caudally. Occipitocervical fixation is a segment long dominated by Medtronic (Vertex, Infinity) and DePuy Synthes. This is a single first case with reported 'encouraging' early results, not outcomes data. - SI-BONE recalls 98 iFuse TORQ implants over a sterile-packaging failure, recommends FDA Class II classification — SI-BONE, Inc. 8-K filed with the SEC September 11, 2026. Tube packaging for iFuse TORQ implants, manufactured May 4-15, 2026, failed to reliably meet sterile-barrier acceptance criteria, risking infection. SI-BONE is recalling 98 distributed units and repackaging/re-sterilizing roughly 3,900 total implants (recalled lots plus affected inventory still in its control); non-distributed stock is quarantined. Two of the recalled implants had already been implanted before the issue was caught; both surgeons were notified and no infections or adverse events have been reported as of the filing. SI-BONE submitted a correction-and-removal report to the FDA on August 31, 2026 and recommended the action be classified as a Class II recall based on its own health hazard evaluation (FDA classification itself not yet confirmed independently). SI-BONE estimates roughly $150,000 in gross charges to Q3/Q4 cost of goods sold. Context: this is a packaging/manufacturing issue, not a reported implant design defect, and lands as Xenix Medical's newly cleared Riva Anchor spinopelvic system (covered in the September 23 episode) is competing for the same segment SI-BONE has long led. iFuse TORQ separately holds an expanded FDA clearance (June 2022) covering pelvic fragility and insufficiency fractures in addition to standard SI joint fusion — the broadest label in SI-BONE's implant line, per SI-BONE/BioSpace: https://www.biospace.com/si-bone-inc-announces-fda-clearance-for-expanded-indication-of-the-ifuse-torq-implant-systemuse-includes-pelvic-fragility-fractures Source
