Keeps playing through doc social Morning Brief

4 stories this morning, for surgeons and the people who support them.

  • Constitution Surgery Alliance enters Michigan by partnering with UnaSource Surgery Center and MiOrtho Surgery Center, the ASC founded by Michigan Orthopaedic Surgeons — Connecticut-based ASC operator CSA announced partnerships with two metro-Detroit surgery centers: UnaSource (five ORs, 50 surgeons, AAAHC Advanced Orthopedic Certification for total joints and complex spine) and MiOrtho (four ORs, robotic joint and spine, founded 2021 by the 50-plus-physician Michigan Orthopaedic Surgeons). Terms were not disclosed; Physician Growth Partners advised the centers. Source
  • FDA classes Philips' Lumify handheld ultrasound correction as a Class I recall: the app can demand transducer re-registration without warning, blocking scanning until it gets a network signal — A software issue in the Lumify iOS and Android app can prompt re-registration of a previously registered transducer at the point of care, and scanning is blocked until it completes over Wi-Fi or cellular; an unstable USB cable connection is a second issue. Philips reported eight serious injuries and four deaths as of September 29, in pre-hospital settings; a software fix is in development. Source
  • Anesthesiology, ORACLE: in a blinded cluster-randomized trial of 110,538 surgeries in 68 operating rooms, supplemental air purification did not reduce surgical infections; stopped for futility — Operating rooms were randomized in four-week blocks to active or sham supplemental air sterilization. Among 58,938 inpatients, the 30-day composite of wound infection, infection-related complications or death was 8.1% versus 8.2% (OR 0.98, 95% CI 0.92-1.05); across all patients 5.5% versus 5.6%. Funded by ActivePure, the device maker. PMID 42896234. Source
  • J Orthop Trauma RCT at 19 US trauma centers: weight bearing at two weeks after ankle fracture fixation was noninferior to six weeks for reoperation, but did not significantly speed return to work — 418 patients (214 early, 204 delayed), excluding fixed syndesmotic injuries. Reoperation for complications 2.3% early versus 3.4% delayed, within the 5-point noninferiority margin; median return to work 54 versus 69 days (HR 1.1, 95% CI 0.8-1.6, p=0.475). Department of Defense funded. PMID 42873990. Source

Faculty can send the show a note — a reaction to a paper, a correction, a read on a rule change — either written, which we shape for broadcast and read in the show's voice, or as a voice note under three minutes, which airs in your own voice. Send one from Studio.
