At LSUHSC, we are committed to doing our part to address the opioid epidemic ravaging our nation. Thanks to our faculty embracing new technologies, innovation and collaboration, strides are being made across campus to change the way that health care professionals think about pain management and prescribing opioids. The origin of this initiative came from our orthopedics department which continues to demonstrate great success in opioid-sparing knee replacement surgery. Through the Opioid Mitigation Initiative (OMI), our goal is to build on this success by educating and training our fellows, residents, students, staff and practitioners on minimizing or eliminating opioids from the non-operative and operative management of pain ranging from arthritis to caesarean sections.
With an aligned mission around patient care and innovation, LSU Health Foundation is excited to explore philanthropic partnerships that will continue to expand this LSUHSC program to educate and train our surgical residents on opioid-sparing surgeries and treatments. By investing in medical education and resident training around pain management, we feel that our future doctors will play an integral role in reducing the need for these addictive narcotics.
