Dr. Russell Warren joined the Hospital for Special Surgery on January 1, 1977 and served as surgeon-in-chief from 1993 to 2003. Dr. Warren is the also the emeritus team physician for the New York Giants football team.

-After receiving his medical degree from the State University of New York at Syracuse in 1966, he completed a 1-year surgical residency at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York and went on to serve as a Lt. Commander for the U.S. Navy during Vietnam. For his service, Dr. Warren received the U.S. Navy Medal of Commendation in 1969.

-He discusses the evolution of Hospital of Special Surgery during his tenure. When he started, they did about 6,000 cases per year and now up over 35,000 surgeries per year.

This is a special episode with Ukrainian born and bred orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Vladyslav Kozanchuk with specialties in hip, knee and shoulder arthroplasty.

This is one of our most impactful episodes being in the trenches of war in Ukraine. It was a challenge getting Dr. Kozanchuk on for this episode in-between the blackouts and having good cell service to call in. Dr. Kozanchuk showed up to the recording with a smile on his face and immense pride for his country. He says “We won’t surrender. Russia won’t win. We will win.” He discusses the pride for all the soldiers on the front lines and support Ukraine receives globally.

-On our recording day, there are 267 injured soldiers in the ward with a train of another 100 wounded soldiers coming in later that night. With a curfew from 11p-5a, there are some nights Dr. Kozanchuk doesn’t make it home and needs to wait until the curfew is lifted in the morning. In addition to the wounded soldiers, there are ongoing elective surgeries within their National Health Service.

– Dr. Kozanchuk provides a shout out to Dr. Kenji Inaba from Keck Medicine and Dr. Gregory Beilman from University of Minnesota for traveling to his hospital and providing their services during the war.

Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo, M.D., Ph.D., is a Mayo Clinic physician-scientist who has several areas of interest in orthopedic research. -Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo was born in Madrid, Spain. It’s in the family business with his father being an orthopedic surgeon. It was in his blood to go into orthopedics.

-We hear about his path in getting a fellowship at Mayo Clinic after Madrid. It’s our first guest who has received his acceptance for a fellowship through a telegram. He is still at the Mayo Clinic and a lifer there.

-What’s it like working at the Mayo Clinic? It’s non-profit organization run by physicians. Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo says no one really chooses to live in Rochester, Minnesota unless you love Mayo and are centered around patient care.

-Robots are finally coming to the shoulder! This is Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo’s passion and says robots will provide accuracy, precision and improve outcomes for patients.

-What’s the highest honor of his career? His Presidency of American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons.

-Dr. St. Pierre is very involved in Sports Medicine and Shoulder research and has been recognized with several international and national awards. He has written numerous articles and book chapters, and has edited four books on Sports Medicine. We discuss one of his breakthrough studies in JBJS on rotator cuff repair.

-What are the innovations in shoulder arthroplasty? Dr. St. Pierre discusses he’s working with a great orthopedic surgeon team at Stryker on a robotic system for the shoulder.
