The Ortho Show
The Ortho Show was born from a passion to share remarkable, insightful, educational and just plain entertaining stories from the world of orthopedics.
Benjamin Young
Over my many years working in the medical device sector I’ve had the good fortune to work with some of the industry’s most respected orthopedic surgeons. I’m excited to use The Ortho Show to share the amazing stories of some of my friends and colleagues I’ve met along the way. I genuinely hope you enjoy it and find something of value within these episodes.
Micah Nicholls
Prior to my involvement in orthopedics, I worked first as an electronic engineer in Silicon Valley and then, after retraining in the UK, as an osteopath. For the past 11 years I’ve been doing research in orthopedics both in academia and for industry. I look forward to bringing you conversations with some of the great minds I’ve had the pleasure of meeting during this time.

Dr. Jim Williams joins us for this episode to discuss his recent retirement as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Cleveland Clinic (Euclid). During his career he served as assistant team physician for the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Cavaliers, and as Head Team Physician at John Carroll University and many Cleveland area high schools. The ArthroFree wireless system—surgical camera + receiver—is equipped with the Meridiem Light Engine (MLE), and requires a fraction of the energy of comparable wired camera systems. The system is designed to simplify sterilization, decrease setup and breakdown times, and eliminate the need for the light source and the power source on the surgical tower. The ArthroFree wireless system will eliminate the hazards of fiber-optic cables, along with the need for camera cable management by surgical assistants. It’s close to hitting commercialization and have no doubt it will hit the stratosphere as soon as it’s available.

We’re doing a pivot away from orthopedics, but addressing one of the most important topics in orthopedics, which is private equity. It’s one of the hottest areas right now for orthopedic practices to join together to scale, create a bond and take back the mission of how healthcare is delivered. It’s an incredibly complex topic to give our listeners baseline information in under 30 minutes. Gary Herschman breaks it down for us and is a M&A regulatory attorney at EBG Law. When health care companies undergo a major strategic transaction through mergers, acquisitions, consolidations, joint ventures, partnerships, buyouts, or new affiliations, Gary Herschman drives these important transactions to a successful closing.

-Why is private equity interested in orthopedics?
-The benefits and fallacies of private equity
