Medical Device Success
The Medical Device Success Podcast and Videocast is a combination of interviews with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and MedTech leaders along with some solo podcasts aimed at improving the ability of the audience to better understand and compete in today’s rapidly changing healthcare ecosystem. We seek out SMEs in areas that can assist MedTech companies in:
• Marketing strategies, tactics and technologies
• Sales strategies, tactics and technologies
• The future of MedTech – technology trends and implementation
• Health research & economics
• Provider issues (hospital systems, ambulatory surgical care, etc.)
In our “In the C-Suite” series we like to get leadership perspectives from MedTech leaders.
Episode 40 – In the C-Suite with Stephanie Marrus, Managing Director, Entrepreneurship, UCSF Innovation Ventures
Stephanie knows the leadership profile necessary to contribute to the success of a new venture. Her education, mentoring and networking program has provided the support necessary to give birth to dozens of life science startups. We will talk about leadership and her popular “Global Online Entrepreneurship Class”. The spring 2021 cohort of this class starts March 31. One of the members of the MedTech Leaders Community took this course last year and told me he highly recommends it. Even people with advanced degrees like MBAs, Doctors of Medicine and Doctors in science take this course. In fact, in the most recent course there were participants from 13 countries and 4 continents.
Reminder – I am not compensated by UCSF for this podcast and video cast.
This video cast is public in the Medical Device Success YouTube channel. Most of the time I reserve video casts for the MedTech Leaders Community. However, I think what Stephanie shares about leadership and the UCSF course are time sensitive. So, the video is public.

Episode 37 – The Virtual Trade Show Panel – A Panel of 5 Executives
What does a box truck have to do with Virtual Trade Shows? You will find out in this episode. I gathered 5 executives from the MedTech Leaders Community to discuss Virtual Trade Shows. We review the 2020 Virtual Trade Show experience. We discuss what worked and what didn’t work. Then we talked about solutions and alternatives. Finally, we reviewed our intentions related to virtual trade shows and alternatives in 2021. Trade shows will never be the same. And, our participation will not be the same. Companies are definitely investing in alternatives.
Later in the video cast, Lauren Dustman, BMMG, shared the Virtual Trade Show Decision making matrix that she and her colleagues developed at BMMG to assist their clients. It is a nice tool.
This was a live event in the MTL community and has been converted into a podcast and video cast. It was a lively and very informative discussion.

Episode 36 – The Future and MedTech with Bertalan Meskó, MD, PhD – The Medical Futurist
Key points – 2021 will be a battle between science and disinformation. And, “The country where the willingness to get vaccinated is greater, wins”. Bertalan is the Medical Futurist. He and I spent some time this past week talking about the pandemic and our near term and long-term future in MedTech. If you don’t subscribe to his newsletters you should. If governments, medical associations, patients and industry seek him out for advice, then this podcast/video cast may be worth a listen (view).
How should the Medical Device industry look at their products and align them with the future? We discuss this.
Back to “willingness” and “winning”. India and China have vaccine acceptance rates of 87% and 85% respectively. At 64%, the US ranked 14th among major economies. The Understanding America Survey conducted in December showed 56% of over 8,000 US respondents indicating a willingness to get the vaccine. This lack of willingness in the US will be a drag on the US economy. Meanwhile, countries like India, China, South Korea, Israel, The UK, etc will more quickly open their economies and prosper.
The MedTech Industry has an obligation to promote science and vaccination.

Episode 35 – CRM 1 – Critical Elements to a Productive Foundation
For MedTech sales to succeed in this new environment, you need Demand Generation. For Demand Generation to succeed, you need a well implemented and accepted CRM system. Only 45% of organizations use CRM for its intended purpose. Less than 40% of businesses have a CRM adoption rate over 90%. Because these statistics include large B2C companies, I suspect the adoption rate in small to medium sized MedTech companies is worse. MedTech is leaving money on the table and starving their sales funnels!! This is why I asked Eliza Hammer Gage, Senior Consultant, Red Argyle to spend two episodes on CRM as part of our series on Demand Generation. Red Argyle is a highly regarded SalesForce CRM consulting partner.
Note that I am not paid by the people or companies that I interview.
The MedTech Leaders Community is growing. Over 70 members from 18 countries. We have over 8 hours of content on selling in the virtual world. A couple members said it is like a master class. There is a 30-day free trial. The equivalent of your first paid month will be contributed to Direct Relief, Doctors without Borders or the American Red Cross.
The videocast will be in the MedTech Leaders Community at medtechleaders.net.
